Supernature by Linda Shevlin
Preview Thursday 19th June 2014 @ 6pm - 8pm
 |
Preview: Supernature Linda Shevlin 6pm – 8pm Thursday 19th June This exhibition of film and installation was developed during a residency at the Organic Centre Co. Leitrim last year. Working with the staff and students of the centre, Shevlin researched and recreated a series of experiments, inspired by the cult novel Supernature, by Lyall Watson (1973), exploring the many and often astounding ways in which nature manifests itself and adapts to its environment including lunar cycles and Hashimoto’s experiments in giving voice to a cactus. Artist’s biography Linda Shevlin is a visual artist and curator based in Co. Roscommon, Ireland. In 2013 she was awarded the Arts Council of Ireland’s Visual Arts Curatorial Residency award and is currently producing a series of events and exhibitions in County Roscommon including newly a commissioned work by Sean Lynch, The Workers, a retrospective of the Art@Work project, featuring Michelle Browne, Gareth Kennedy and Elaine Reynolds and The Workers symposium with contributions from Grizedale Arts and others. In 2012 she was awarded one of two inaugural residencies under the Spark Project funded through Leitrim Arts Office & Enterprise Board in partnership with the Arts Council of Ireland. Recent exhibitions include Supernature, Galway Arts Centre (2013); Tulca Festival, Galway, curated by Megs Morley (2011); Circadian, Leitrim Sculpture Centre (2010); Social Capital, curated by Claire McAree, The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim (2009) and Crave, Cross Gallery, Dublin (2008). Recent screenings of her films include Camper, TRUCK Space, Calgary, Canada (2013); Interchange, CEFA, Philadelphia, USA (2012); Surface Shorts, Surface Gallery, Nottingham, UK (2011) and Falling Awake Patna Museum, India (2010). In 2009 Linda completed an MA in Visual Arts Practices through IADT and in 2010, was appointed to the Board of Directors of Visual Artists Ireland. Attachment – Text by Joanne Laws
But Never Mind by Hannah Mooney
Preview 19th June 2014 - 6pm - 8pm
 |
But Never Mind is the most recent iteration of Mooney's continuing experimentation of split screen video, an approach that she describes as allowing 'instantaneous burps' of unrelated imagery to collide and spark new modes dialogue. Clichéd imagery recalls sentimental 1970s nature posters or stock video photography, offering brief yet unexpectedly emotive pairs of dual images, insistantly prodding the viewing to wonder at their meaning. Hannah Mooney is a Bristol-based Contemporary artist from Dublin. She graduated in 2012 with First Class Honors in BA Fine Art Media from the National College of Art and Design, Ireland. Hannah works primarily in video/ installation and since her degree has previously exhibited at the Exeter Contemporary Open (2013) and worked across the UK.
Curator Anne Mullee is based in Dublin and also writes, makes films and works as an arts administrator. She holds an MA in Cultural Policy and Arts Management and before returning to the arts spent 15 years working in TV and media in London. She is currently working on a collaborative documentary about artist-led spaces in Ireland and devising a group exhibition for Galway Arts Centre. Anne previously worked as our Assistant Curator through the LAB’s internship programme.

Children's Art in Libraries - Summer 2014
 |
A Sleeping Princess, The fables of Aesop and a story shop run by the eccentric Mr. Higgle Piggle – we’re exploring all sorts of different stories this Summer, stories that will come in all shapes and sizes. So whether you want to create them or listen to them, theChildren’s Art in Libraries Programme is giving you the opportunity to discover the stories that are unique and special to you. With eleven programmes taking place across 9 libraries, a broad range of artists have been commissioned to create short-term Arts Programmes that any child who lives in the City will have the opportunity to access. Adopting a Storytelling theme, we have developed a series of engaging programmes for children that have a distinctly creative approach. Inspired by Aesop's Fables, Making Fables will encourage participants to tell stories through simple animations of artwork, made through drawing, collage and construction. Mr. Higgle Piggles Story Shop– a week long creative camp for 8-10 year olds – will use art, drama, writing and creativity to carefully nurture the child’s imagination. This year our Family Strand of the programme, will introduce an integrated series of music and drama workshops, that will encourage children to re-imagine the familiar tale of Sleeping Beauty. The Summer will also see the return of Theatre Lovett to our libraries, with a wildly unreasonable and illogical quiz for 7-10 year olds, entitled Which Absurd Cat are You? Older Children can participate in a series of workshops teaching them how to draw their own portrait, entitled Here’s Looking at You Kid; while those of a more musical bent will have the opportunity to participate in three days of Music Composition iPad Workshops. As always participation is free of charge, so if you’re interested, get down to your local library and grab a brochure to find out what programmes they have waiting there for you this July and August! Dublin City Council’s latest Public Art Commission - a series of five short operas entitled Things We Throw Away
 |
Rehearsals have begun for Dublin City Council’s latest public art commission - a series of five short operas entitled Things We Throw Away - music by Brian Irivne and text by John McIlduff - produced by Wide Open Opera. Each of the five operas tells a distinctive story about things or moments that we might ordinarily observe and pass by. A specially recruited community choir sings Suck it in - as they relish the moment of peace they have while taking a quick cigarette break outside a building. A father and son drink in a bar, the son passes out, the father thinks back to when he was a young boy and he carried him on his shoulders. Drive by Shooting features two old ladies on zimmer frames, chasing an old man on a zimmer frame, determined to shoot him because he has been unfaithful to one of them. A banana-selling woman on Capel Street reflects. A discarded Ironing board sings to the discarded Iron a passionate song about when they were young and steamy. Each opera takes a passing, almost flippant moment, but delves inside it to find a something that causes us to stop and think about some of the everyday scenes in the city. Brian Irvine’s music is kaleidoscopic, relishing many different influences and bringing a great colour to the musical scores. John McIlduff’s text is witty, engaging and insightful. These operas will be performed in a variety of public places throughout Dublin on Friday 4th and Sat 5th July. Singers sing live with backing track of new score recorded by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

Friday 24th through to Monday 27th October 2014
 |
This October Dublin City will go gothic for the third annual Bram Stoker Festival, running Friday 24th through to Monday 27th October 2014. Festival Artistic Director Jo Mangan has been giving us a sneak preview of what’s in store and information about an upcoming artists’ call-out… (more) “We’re thrilled to have the chance to channel the darker side in putting together the Bram Stoker Festival 2014. It’s going to be a fantastic and unexpected bank holiday weekend for those wanting to get their inner goth on, as well as aficionados of the work of Mr. Stoker himself. For this year’s festival, we’re building on the wonderful work of the past 2 years, by making the festival really inhabit the streets of the city, for the delight of Dubliners and visitors alike. Expect everything from small-scale intimate work to large-scale interactive events. We aim to (re) animate the city for a final supernatural party before the winter darkness descends. As part of Bram Stoker Festival 2014, there will be an open call for artists of all disciplines, details of which will be circulated in the next newsletter and will shortly be available on www.bramstokerfestival.com. Mouth on Fire Presents - Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape in the Irish Language at The New Theatre
June 9th – 14th 2014 @7.30pm (Preview Monday 9th June)
 |
Star of Ros na Rún Takes on Beckett! Macdara Ó Fátharta, the villainous barman Tadhg Ó Direáin in Ros na Rún, is playing in Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape in the Irish Language at The New Theatre, Dublin, this coming June. Macdara had a lengthy stage career at The Abbey, as well as appearing in the films Far and Away, The Blackwater Lightship, and the first ever Irish Language feature film Poitín. This is Macdara’s first Beckett role. Téip Dheireanach Krapp is a new translation of Beckett’s celebrated one man show by world renowned poet and translator Gabriel Rosenstock. It is directed by Cathal Quinn, Artistic Director of the award winning Mouth on Fire Theatre Company, who has already taken Beckett’s work to India this year, and is just back from its second highly successful trip to Japan. ‘We are delighted to have an actor of Macdara’s calibre performing Beckett for Mouth on Fire’ said Cathal, ‘We always work to the very highest standards with excellent actors; Macdara is our fourth Abbey actor, Peadar Lamb, Geraldine Plunkett and Clive Geraghty have played roles for us in the past, and all through the Irish language’. It isn’t hard to see why Mouth on Fire Theatre Company is ‘establishing itself as the most respected purveyor of Samuel Beckett's work in Ireland’. In less than four years they have produced superb World, European and Irish Premieres performances of this Irish Nobel Laureate, picking up awards in Russia, while also landing rights to translate his work into the Irish language. They have taken English and Irish versions of Beckett’s work to the UK, Russia, India and Japan, and Irish Ambassador John Neary in Tokyo was so impressed with the performances in Japan over the past two years that he has suggested Mouth on Fire’s visit to Tokyo become an annual event. Cathal went on: “Our theatre company was established with the aim of making Beckett’s work more accessible to a wider audience. We are always striving to innovate, whilst also being as scrupulously specific as Beckett himself was when he directed his own work.” “Translating Beckett’s work into Irish – and, by doing so, introducing his plays to new audiences – as well as taking the highest Irish culture abroad, all fits in with our overall ethos as a company. We are building our reputation at home and abroad. Plans are afoot to take Beckett’s plays and poetry to America, Canada and South Korea next year. “We want people who have never experienced Beckett before to see, hear, enjoy and understand his work. We constantly strive to counter the false assertions which can sometimes be levelled at Beckett’s work, that it is too difficult or too depressing.” “We have led workshops on Beckett to schoolchildren in Ireland, to hospital patients, to American University students, Beckett academics; all have left enthralled by Beckett’s highly skilled writing and gallows humour.” The company has received backing from Dublin City Council, Foras na Gaeilge and Culture Ireland has kindly supported the performances abroad. Performance Dates: June 9th – 14th 2014 @7.30pm (Preview Monday 9th June) Venue: The New Theatre, 43 East Essex St, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 www.thenewtheatre.com 01 670 33 61 Tickets: €15/€12

Call for WICKED Film Project Proposal Engaging Young People, Wicklow County Arts Office & County Wicklow Film Commission
Closing Date: June 25th @ 12 NOON 2014
 |
Wicklow County Arts Office and County Wicklow Film Commission would like to invite filmmaker/s working in any context to submit for a project opportunity to work with young people in County Wicklow. The successful filmmaker/s will propose a project model, which will work with young people either over a period of months or in a concentrated period of weeks within 2014. During this time the filmmaker/s will engage with young people in the experience of developing a film (group to be indicated in proposal) on their proposed project. The available budget for the opportunity is €8,000 to cover three components: fees, outcomes and materials. Please note that while we are seeking expressions of interest from either one filmmaker or a group of filmmakers in the case that there is a sole applicant filmmaker, that party should budget for an assistant producer / supervisor to be present at all stages of the project during the engagement of young people. Alternatively, the group proposed may be in a position to provide this support.
The project must realise a film initiative with young people (min 16 participants) in County Wicklow. The applicant filmmaker/s may propose where, when and how the project will take place. It is up to the applicant to propose a group of youth with which to work. This can be proposed in a school, community or youth setting. Alternatively, the project could be proposed as a summer school initiative.
Applicants must propose an idea for a script / storyboard and then propose how they would collaborate with the young people to develop a short or short film series over the course of the project.
Wicklow County Arts Office and County Wicklow Film Commission are open to the many ways in which the filmmaker/s may select to work with the young people during the course of the residency in documentary, animation, fiction etc. Through this application process we are asking applicants to complete the attached application form clearly outlining the following:
· What they aim to achieve during the project · How they propose to work with young people, relative to their own practice · What amount of contact time is proposed weekly/for the duration of the project · Any outcomes envisaged · How documentation will be managed Background: About the Previous Wicked Film Programmes Wicklow County Council and County Wicklow Film Commission have had a long history of working with young people through film. Following two film residency initiatives, the WICKED Young Filmmakers Training Programme was established. This model worked as a week long summer course where young people aged between 12 and 16 years learned how to write, direct, act shoot and edit a film and also produce animated shorts. The following are you-tube links to samples of the shorts created in the last number of years. http://www.pureproject.ie/what-we-do/pure-animation-movies/ What we would like to do in 2014, is to commission a project under this call which will give young people either, a film residency, project or summer school experience. It is intended that the young people will learn first hand how to develop material for film, to participate in its creation (including acting if relevant i.e. not in the case of animation) and assist in the editing process. On Selecting a Group Participants must be within the age range of between 12 – 16 years. A group can be made up of any combination of ages within that range (i.e. mixed age group or 13/14 year old group etc.) Applicants may select to work with any of the following within Wicklow: · An arts organisation · An arts venue · A community group · A school (secondary) · A youth group · A youth project Please note it is essential in the context of the application that you demonstrate that you have consulted with the group or organisation chosen and that the project is feasible in partnership with them. The Green Mile: A New Walking Tour of St Stephen’s Green, launching Saturday 5th April The award-winning Little Museum Dublin is delighted to announce to the launch of The Green Mile, a brilliant new walking tour that tells the story of St Stephen’s Green, a square which has been at the centre of Irish history for hundreds of years.
Every year 8.1 million people walk through St Stephen's Green, but few know the central role it played in Irish history: James Joyce studied on the south side of the Green and the Free State Constitution was drafted at the Shelbourne Hotel. The Green has long served as a backdrop for public and private drama, as well as the setting for many great love stories. The Tour: The experience begins with a short presentation at the Little Museum, with participants then embarking upon a 90-minute tour of the park in the company of an expert local guide: Donal Fallon – historian and co-author of Come Here to Me, Dublin’s Other History, Donal teaches a course called Hidden Dublin: From the Monto to Little Jerusalem in UCD, and is a regular contributor to Irish radio and TV. course Ronan Sheehan – author of Heart of the City, one of the most acclaimed books ever written about Dublin, Ronan describes himself as “a lawyer, writer and descendent of John Philpot Curran, sometime resident of St Stephen’s Green.” Ronan is also a fantastic storyteller! Tours are packed with anecdote, humour and theatre and take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 11.30am; free with your ticket to the Little Museum of Dublin, 15 St. Stephen’s Green.

Talbot Gallery & Studios are proud to present: Sinead Onora Kennedy CLOY
Opening: Thursday 5th June @ 6-8pm
 |
Event: Amanda Coogan in conversation with Sinead Onora Kennedy, Saturday 14th June @ 12noon 6th June - 27th June 2014
Sinead was the winner of 2013 Talbot Gallery & Studio’s Most Promising Graduate Award and this show marks the culmination of her residency. We chose Sinead as her work breaks down the boundaries between the disciplines of fashion and contemporary visual art, which is clearly manifest in her practice. In 2013 she also won the 2013 Persil Fashion Awards. Sinead Onora Kennedy graduated from Fashion Design at NCAD in 2013. The focus of this promising young designer in her graduate exhibition was a fashion, sculpture and drawing practice strongly influenced by notions of perception of figure and self. Her impeccable technical skill and design imagination is married to a very considered contemporary art making practice. “I was trying to use materials that displayed volume and bulk but are transparent so that you could see the form as displayed via the figure.” Sinead’s work is an exploration of what we perceive as ugly. Aristotle stated that the beautiful object is one that has the structure of an object: internally it exhibits coherence, and externally it establishes a sharp boundary between itself and the world. Therefore the ugly object is one in which the inside demonstrates that it is larger than its outside, or its representation (contamination). In this case it is out of place. It has passed some boundary, limit or threshold into space where it should not be. Fat, both solid as lard, and liquid as oil epitomise ugliness because they are uncontained by surface or boundaries. Its surface or boundary is constantly changing as it spreads. The surface is indistinguishable from what it should contain. Sinead is interested in the concept that people exist twice, both as themselves and as representations of themselves. People exist as their thoughts and feelings by using their bodies as containers, and exist again as their actual appearance, the image we create to face the world. This interest is manifest in very beautiful, highly skilled articulations of fashion in various materials and media. The Talbot Gallery & Studios Most Promising Graduate Award grants one student the use of a studio space above the gallery for eleven months and a solo exhibition at the end of this term. Moreover it provides the recent college graduate with a support system and the opportunity to observe how more established artists work and earn a living by placing them in a professional creative environment.
